Anyone working on a v3dmm movie: Read this. *[SHOCKING NEW INFO!!!!?]*

NOTE: The save bug has been fixed in the latest version of v3dmm.

In the event of depressing, depressing failure, however:

With the release of several v3dmm movies in the film fest, v3dmm usage might finally be on the rise to most of the community, so this point bears repeating: The program has a recurring bug that refuses to allow you to save, and corrupts your .vmm file beyond repair if you close 3DMM. There is a fairly simple method for fixing this, but you need to be aware of it before you encounter the bug, or else you might quit 3DMM with your project unsaved, which would ruin it forever.

If 3DMM pops up a "Technical Difficulties - We can't save your movie right now" error message, click okay, and navigate to the directory you attempted to save into. A .vmm named Temp4ACF or Temp7CA3 or Temp**** whatever will have been generated. This is your movie data, spat out by v3dmm's save function without any expansions. Copy the file into some other directory. When it's copied, you can close 3DMM.

Then, with the v3dmm Manager still open, click the browse button, find this temp file, double-click it, and launch 3DMM. You'll have your movie data open with all of the correct expansions active; now, save as and replace the original file with this one.

To reiterate, when a technical difficulties message appears in v3dmm:

1. Window out of 3DMM.
2. Find the most recent temp file generated in the directory you were trying to save in (if this has happened before, you might have multiple ones floating around, make sure you don't grab the wrong one accidentally).
3. Copy this file into another directory.
4. Close 3DMM.
5. Browse and select the temp file from the v3dmm manager window with all of your movie's expansions active.
6. Launch 3DMM and save your movie.

If the bug pops up and you're ever not sure what to do, come check this thread. I'm not trying to flash big scary lights at everyone over and over again or anything, I just want to make sure everyone knows what to do if this happens.

I'm lucky in that I've never encountered the bug, but at least I'll always know what to do.

Is Travis any closer to finding out why this happens?

Nope. Because in all the computers I've installed v3dmm on, and all the test movies I've made with it, it has never happened to me.

I never had it happen with any regularity until V1 started getting much bigger in filesize, and even now I can save 20 times and have it not happen. However, it does, almost daily (though keep in mind I've been working pretty much all day for the past week).

I find that I only get the savebug if I try to save a project more than once without making any changes. yeah. dunno if that's the same for everyone. I just make about 4 copies and loop save. Say my movie is named "Poop" I start on Poop and save it the first time as "poop.v3mm". Next, I DO NOT save it again as the same file OR another file like a backup. you MUST make changes, even the slightest ones will work... Ok, say I add 2 new scenes, I then save that movie as "poopa.v3mm". add 2 more scenes. save as "poopb.v3mm" repeat until I get to "poopd.v3mm" then I add 2 more scenes, and save it overtop of "poop.v3mm" , never saving it as the same file it was before, and never double saving. and yeah, it has worked for me.

Interesting. I've had it happen after about an hour's worth of changes without saving, though usually saved to the same filename.

I'm up to VLARION1w.vmm, though.

Ok, I just ran into this nasty bug...Im doing everything you said.
Be back later with updates.

EDIT: There seems to be another bug also. When I went to close down 3dmm, it had the "leave sounds" or "delete" option. So ofcourse I leave the sounds, because the movie is still in the works.
So I hit leave sounds, Than that tech error comes up. I didnt know what the hell just went wrong but oh well.
So than it asks, "Do you want to quite 3dmm?" And I hit yes, because I was done and all. 3dmm exits.
Later on that day I go to view the scene I just made in the movie. And the dam movie is nowhere to be found. Just fucking gone.

So there goes lots of hard work, out the friggen window. NOW THIS.

Good luck, make sure you have a copy of that temp file somewhere other than the directory you were trying to save in before you close 3dmm.

Ok I saved the movie, the error came up. But I found the temp in the folder. Made a copy, the temp file is in another folder.

Next is close 3dmm.
I have faith it will work, just seems strange that the temp file is only about 2/3 the size of the real movie. Anyway here goes..

The temp file is your movie's content without any v3dmm expansions included. That's why it's important to leave the manager open, since it still has all of the necessary expansions active.

Edit: I just realised none of them are actually MODELS; there are loads of caps with models in - they're just the sort of things that can easily be done in 3dmm now (the new platform is called v3dmm). It's easy to use and install.

Extract the Updater and then make sure all the check marks are green. There are links that take you to downloads.

And for movies, check out www.3dmmstudio.co.uk - 'Mean Bread' is an excellent example of what v3dmm can be used for.

If I'm already working on a v3dmm thing and I suddenly realise that I need another expansion, is it too late to import it?
