My 3DMM Showreel (2004 - 2014)
Ben Rice's Avatar
Plot Summary:
As I take my final bow as a 3DMMer, I present to you a showcase of the last ten years making movies both for and with the 3DMM Community.

So yesterday I released my final 3dmm movie, having planned to call it a day making them for some time now I wanted to mark this occasion by putting together a compilation showcasing the last ten years of movies I've animated. I obviously couldn't fit everything in, in fact I spent a good few weeks editing this and cutting it down, there was a lot of other cool stuff I would have liked to throw in here but ultimately the last ten years have been down to the films you see in the final product.

So once again thank you guys for being my audience, my friends and my family.

Enjoy!

It's a hell of a showreel man, nice work. I don't know how to word my sentiment of "you did some good work these 10 years and should be proud" without having it sound, well, like that. All hilariously overwrought and dramatic. You're not dying and it's not like you're a retiring policeman or something. But yeah, good show Ben!

Haha, don't pull another Dylan's Forgotten Fate on us, Ben. I know you're going to be in the next DCM. I can smell it.

But in all seriousness, its pretty great. Congrats on 10 years of McZee's Movie Makin' Magic!

haha you're correct on me being in the next drunk chain movie, i've already done my bit though but may still do another one in the future as they are ridiculously fun and are barely time consuming at all. but even then that's not a promise, i've really grown weary of animating 3dmm now, some stuff i could have animated in a heartbeat takes a lot more time and effort nowadays.

i'm not doing what i did in 2005, which was more out of depression, i'm just eager to focus my creative mind in new and bigger things, these last ten years have taught me that i want to keep making films and i think screen writing and storytelling are my strongest creative qualities that could get me on that path. this is just a good happy 3dmm retirement plan so i can really focus and take my first steps into a hopeful career, i may get drunk one day and add to a DCM going around if the mood strikes me but otherwise i'm ready to move on now.

Great work putting this together!

Compilation videos are sometimes cathartic- whereas a preview might work better leaving your favorite sequence on the floor, a compilation is anything-goes.

I would say that a lot of the imagery from this compilation was from scenes that were near and dear to you, and not necessarily the animations that you were most proud of.

There were a lot of shots and characters that I was unfamiliar with here, which surprised me. First thing is first- your Tale of a Toy Monkey work is by far the strongest. Your animation of the default characters was actually pretty impressive, which surprised me. I figured that HMC-centric animators would get too fed up with the limitations of default actors, but you seem to wield both fairly well.

I liked all of the explosions that began around 6:30, that was a nice cohesive touch. One thing that strikes me though all of these clips is that you take pretty good care with the backgrounds, which contrasts strongly to my own style. Sometimes the characters take a backseat to the setting, which is often a good sign of a story worth telling. Granted, much of these stories involved skeletons and knife-clubs, but it's still an interesting touch.

The little ditty at the end helped end the thing on a light note, which is a good choice. It's remarkable that you filled 10 minutes of footage- that represents a lot of cutting, editing, and material to work from.

Good work on this! It's a very good overview of your 3dmm career thusfar. I, personally, would have preferred a more succinct edit, but I know how excruciating it is to leave any scenes at all on the cutting room floor. Each frame represents 30 minutes of work!

I really enjoyed this, and I smiled at some of the animations. I really liked the Willy blowing up, dude almost puking on naked nakita, and skelly putting his torso back on his body . Like Goro, I would've liked to see shorter edit. You are very talented; it's sad that you are retiring. You are very talented, so keep on making art!
