I like to take the view that a lot of what we believe due to science (evolution or the Big Bang, for example) really did take place, but all due to a divine influence. It's easier that way.

Yeah, but you see, by using the term 'accident' you're implying that it couldn't be some kind of random universal event, when its obviously NOT a random universal event, its more like just the result of an evolutionary unbroken chain of life which slowly ended on this. So yeah, no.

There's no aliens abducting people, no mysterious monsters, and no supernatural puppeteers. These are all sensationalised, man-made ideas. The undeniable reality of nature is far more fascinating, with mind-controlling fungus spores and spiders that lasso their prey.

Just slipping in my unoriginal two cents before it gets noisy.

yeah.. it's a good show.

I don't believe anything said in the bible. I think the whole thing is complete bullshit. Whether or not it was written with good intentions or not, it's too dangerous. It causes too much conflict, and can be interpreted in many different ways. I personally don't believe there's some higher being or god.
Saying yes to this question isn't saying that you are a christian or that you believe in the bible.. The question is "do you believe in god".. which can mean any religion or philosophy. I think quite a few of you answered no with christianity/catholocism in mind.
For all of you who said no: how do you think this world started?

I don't believe in Bible God. Its been proven that thought and love come from evolution, so without anything to come before it, it would be ridiculous for thought and love, especially in any form that we know it, to exist and then create the entire cosmos. Then of course theres the thousands of things in the bible that are ridiculous and contradict science. Now if you want to read the bible symbolically or metaphorically and want to call the universe, nature, or a general metaphysical awe "God" then sure I'll say I believe.

I don't have any gripes with people that believe, I used to believe that we'd be better off converting all of them to atheism, but I was an angsty black metal nerd. I think that we all have our way of connecting with that sense of awe when we think of the universe and our place in it, except some people who just don't seem to care which is fine too. But I'm constantly thinking about the big questions like "what does life mean" or "what is all of this," and for me thats really my way of understanding reality and existence. Growing up in a religious environment would be stifling for my thoughts and I'm sure I'd have a lot less understanding of my place in life. Some people don't think like that so their way of understand the world and reality is through believing in a mythology, which thats perfectly fine I think as long as they don't impose on government or act out violently. I wouldn't want to take that away from them, just as I wouldn't want them to impose their metaphysical ideas on me.

There are also a lot of religious people who think that without religion people have no morals, and I'm beginning to believe that for a lot of people, especially those who believe that particular idea, it might actually be true. I don't really have any evidence of that, but it seems like such an absurd thought to me that I don't really understand how they could believe it unless by knowing that that is the way that themselves are built. Also I had a Mormon friend who over the years left his religion and then got deep into drugs and all sorts of terrible behavior, and yeah thats not proof, I don't believe in this 100%, I'm just speculating on why some people might turn to relgion. Another good aspect of religion is the community. Its a good social thing that keeps people of the community together and talking with each other (of course I know there are extremist muslims who oppress their people and fundamentalist mormons who are also abused, but by and large the average joe schmoe churches in your local town are good people). Actually I think some people who just don't really think or care much about the big deep questions might even turn to religion for the community aspect alone and not give the complete overhaul of beliefs much thought, which is also fine I think because its not like much bad comes from it, since those people probably won't turn to an extremist religion.

This is an extremely good show, I recommend all the episodes.

I can't believe I skipped this part, people who thinks this way is a disgrace to our society; I really don't KNOW how safe is to be near them if their only reason for not commiting criminal acts is the fear of an eternal torture in hell.

I really DO worry about these people.

Yeah it might be true if 'not having religion' equates to the destruction of all emotional capacity and will to live.

I dunno

sometimes I get my head bitten off when I say this, but I think it's pretty ignorant to believe in God definitely or not believe definitely

Explain yourself then. About the not believing, since I agree with the former.

the people who claim to know for absolute 100% sure God exists... it's bull. Of course they don't know. If they did it wouldn't be faith, it would be fact. And it isn't fact because there is no proof.

on the flip side, people who claim to know for absolute 100% sure God does not exist, it is equally, objectively speaking, bull. They can't disprove it, just like the believers can't prove it.

For some reason what a lot of people seem to have trouble with is accepting that it's okay not to know this particular answer [among others]. There is no shame in that

on that note I think religion has ended up ruining humanity

That's what I hate about agnosticism, it's seen as a fence sitting belief, when really it's the only option. Logic dictates that logic can't understand god.
