Disabling ogg vorbis in vista?

Sorry to make another ogg vorbis thread, I have read the (many) others but they all seem to be for XP. I can uninstall it using the remover, I'd just prefer to turn it off, however vista seems to be hiding the audio codecs from me, google hasn't been much help yet.

I can access the driver for HDMI audio (which is the only thing that shows up under 'sound, video and game controllers' in the device manger), from there I go into device details and it gives me a list of dll and sys files that are in the system32 folder. I dare not do anything to them, and none look ogg vorbis related anyway.

Anyone out there on vista know where it is?

Many thanks.

I've found a workaround here but it involves a basic regedit,

Quote:
1. Choose Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and press Enter to start the Windows Registry Editor.
2. Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32.

3. Double-click the codec that you want to disable.

Note: Video codec listings usually start with vidc; audio codec listings usually end with an .acm extension.

(for me, it comes up as msacm.vorbis)

4. In the Edit String dialog box, add a semicolon (;) to the beginning of the value in the Value Data box to disable the entry. For example:

;vorbis.acm

5. Click OK.
6. Close the Registry Editor window.
However it didn't work for me, 3dmm still crashes upon selecting anything from the main menu with the 'Oops!' message. It might work for someone else?

Even better, I've found a freeware program called InstalledCodec, a basic program that lists all off your installed codecs. Using this, I found two ogg vorbis codecs installed (the extra one is an 'ogg splitter' for directshow), I disabled both of them.

But it still doesn't work

How do you know it's even OGG VORBIS' fault

Well mainly because of this in the 'get 3dmm here' thread,

Quote:
Frequent Install Errors
I get a constant "Oops" error and have to end the program manually.
Uninstalling the broken ogg-vorbis codec

It seemed like a no-brainer, I'm not so sure now.

Yeah, I had problems with this too. Also, once I finally got it uninstalled, I couldn't get it RE-installed properly, without looking up more info.

In general, if I understand right, there is NOTHING wrong with the regular ogg vorbis codec. It's the one that comes in the K-Lite codec pack and with FL Studio that causes problems

I have fl studio installed, plus I'm sure when I got this computer I got the k-lite pack, should I try uninstalling them?

K-lite wasn't the problem

I'm thinking I might just spend the money and get my old XP laptop fixed

Use the uninstaller, then when you want to use fl studio go to start>programs>Image-line>FL Studio>Advanced>Reset Settings and then when you go back to 3dmm run the uninstaller again. I'm on xp but I think that this worked for me back when I did use vista on my parents computer.

I uninstalled FL completely, turned off the codec and still problems.

I'm going to just uninstall ogg altogether, I don't need it much anyway, however the 3dmmstudio link worries me a bit. Google claims it's an attack site? And the zip just contains an .inf file, I'm not sure what to do with it. Any help?

Also thanks to everyone that replied, I'm sure most people are sick of hearing about ogg vorbis by now (the list of search results for 'vorbis' is really long)

Just uninstall it?

EDIT: I mean I know that's what you eventually did but I don't see why it was such a thing not to

Haha, I got a new comp and now i'm having the same problem; I'm done with 3dmm though so I'm not gonna waste time trying to troubleshoot it.

...I agree with Phil.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I got 3dmm to work on my Vista laptop, but there were still problems with it I believe(yet overall it still worked fine).

Oh hey Mabdog, did you also try using Vista to run it as if it were "Windows XP" or "Windows 98"? Pretty sure it's just a 'right-click 3DMM and go to properties' thing.

Yeah I uninstalled vorbis, but it still would freeze at the main menu. I never had any problems with it in XP, vista really doesn't like it though. I put my movie on hold until I get my xp laptop fixed.

Do you guys happen to have 64 bit vista? Would that even have anything to do with it? Just asking cuz I know it works on vista but it won't work for me now and the only real difference from before is that its 64 bit now.

Nah I'm using 32

This annoys me greatly, although my bro's computer runs it (XP) so I can't complain, just happy it's working somewhere.
