mostly ashamed.

especially when I hear shitty songs like "This is ourrrr counnntry!" are the political anthem for the anti-immigration movement. Nobody's allowed into our country because this is OUR country. And ya'll are terrorists. Yet we're the ones that killed 100 million indians because we were pissed off they were IN OUR SPOT!

no, but I hate shitheads who say, "well if your not proud to be an american then GET OUT!," or people who do actually get out because they "hate america." if you got a problem with your country, then as a citizen of that country it is your responsibility to help fix the problem. now that said, I am proud that most of the awesome modern technological things came out of my country.

Eh, not really. I'm not really proud of any inherent quality about myself I didn't choose; I was born here.

I LOVE it here. I hate a lot of the shit my government does, but I LOOOOOVE it here. Even being poor as shit, you can make your life into whatever you want here, and really, nobody is going to stand in your way.

I feel lucky to have been born here, though.

Yes, I'm proud of being American. Being patriotic and loving your country goes a lot deeper than just the actions of the government...I'm very proud of the American people and our accomplishments.

I dunno... When I see "Are you proud of being an American", I'm thinking like, among the WORLD POPULATION, among a group of people from other countries, would YOU be proud of your country, America. And so my answer is definitely NO.

We have great achievements, tons of them, but in my opinion the other stuff outweighs that when looked at from a world view.

Not really. Sometimes I have a lot of money, sometimes I don't. I do what I want. I say what I want, and when people try to tell me what to do I tell them to shut the fuck up and suck my dick and move on with my life.

No, I'm not really proud of being born here. It's not like I had a choice or anything. I do feel fortunate that I wasn't born in some place like Ethiopia though. Patriotism pisses me off sometimes:

This is a prime example of why patriotism pisses me off. People don't have a choice of where they'll be born so they don't hold any responsibility to staying in their country and attempting to fix its problems within their short life spans. If people are born in to a country that is completely fucked, they should at least have the choice of moving to another country to have a better life. THIS IS WHY IMMIGRATION EXISTS. Do you expect the starving families in third world countries to fix their government's problems? Are you really saying that is their responsibility to fix the problems because they were born there?

Oh, right, yeah, I'm pretty sure most starving poor families in third world countries are able to immigrate. The people that do have that option, most likely are capable of making some change for the better, but why do that when you can run away and leave the power in the hands of the people that fucked things up in the first place. Obviously (or so I thought) not every issue is black and white, if you have starving children and the option to immigrate to a place where they won't be starving then duh, but if you are a doctor that doesn't make much money in Kuwataristan and would make a ton in US then that is pretty shitty to leave.

If someone is born into a family with a retarded brother and later on the parents die is it that person's responsibility to look after him?

Really? There isn't a problem with all their successful citizens leaving just to make more money? They have enough problems as it is without us taking all their good people. Also you don't see how its selfish to abandon your nation for more money, or for anything really?

Once again, you’re assuming every immigrant from a poor country has had a successful life and therefore owes his country his 'services'?

Since we’re speaking theoretically here, that doctor from Kuwataristan may have other reasons for leaving his country other than money. Every immigrant has their own personal reason for leaving a country such as better education, safety, etc. The point is that you don’t know each immigrant’s story, so your suggestion that they owe their country their services is stupid.

This analogy is retarded. My country isn’t my “family”… it’s a piece of governed land that I was born on.

A long time ago people were born into villages instead of nations and it was then their responsibility to contribute to their community, now nation has replaced that, but I do see how it could be easy to not see any connection with the nation one is born in. You feel that nobody has a commitment to anything but himself and his relations, a pretty selfish point of view but you are entitled to it.
