Converting Quake 2 Models to Actors/Props in 7gen

Hey. I'm Xim. I'm new here. I've been using 3DMM for quite some time now, but I'm new to modding, I only recently discovered it. I've been on and off in using it. I checked this modding stuff out a couple weeks ago and some of it seems pretty easy. I've been playing around with 7Gen. It seems you guys don't have a tutorial on Quake 2 models. I was bored so I wrote one.

Converting Quake 2 Models to Actors/Props
Tutorial By: Xim

Part 1: Downloading a model.

You can get some Quake 2 models at Planet Quake make sure it is a Quake 2 model and not a Quake 3 or 4 one. You can also find them at other sites on the web, using a search engine.

After downloading the file. Unzip the files into a folder.

Part 2: Fill out the basic information

Expansion Name: This is the name the actor/prop will have in 3DMM. E.g.: Doom Guy

Author Name: Your name.

Orig. Author Name: The name of the person who actually made the Quake 2 model. E.g: Phoenix

Short Name: The name of the file. E.g: Doom

Part 3: Loading it up

There should be a small grey button that says LOAD right under where you put in the sign up info. Click the button, another box should pop up, find the folder where you put the files into.

Most models some with a character and a few weapons. The weapons will useally be named something like w_blaster.md2 and the character will be named something like tris.md2. If you want to make an actor, import tris.md2.

After that, you should have a list of animations on the left and skins on the right. If you’re unsure what skins fit the actor/prop, check the pcx. Files that came with it. Delete all the skins you don’t want for the actor/prop.

If you wish to make an actor make sure Make Actor is selected, it should be under the list of animations.

You should also load a preview image. The model doesn’t really come with any decent ones that would fit, so you may want to make your own.

Make sure you also generate an ID number for the actor/prop. You can also type one yourself, if you’re paranoid about the generator. Once you’re done click generate VXP, and you’re golden!

Part 4: Other stuff

I’ve noticed a couple problems with the Q2 models. The levelling is kind of messed up, so you’ll have to rise the to a proper ground level, it’s not too much of a problem.

One thing that really ticked me off is that a model of the Doom guy, had his running animation frames separated, so you’d have to change his action every time he took a step.

One thing that is really convenient, is that all the weapons have animation that moves them along with the actors, so you can move along an actor, then place a weapon, line it up in his hands, and then move the weapon along with the actor and it looks fine!

Okay so I hoped that I was able to help you guys out, have fun! I've read a few topics like the 7gen for dummies by Darth Fyer, sorry if I beat you to the chase of doing this.

You should really get into the habbit of looking at the files in a program such as Q2Modeler (version 0.9b) that way you can see if the model is facing the wrong way or if its going through the origin, and fix it.

Again, if you use Q2Modeler you can fix the animation glitches. (its pretty much a text file that causes that)

Darth Flyer: You're welcome.

Thomas Linton: I have the CD but I'm not actively playing it right now, nor do I have it installed.

Shootfast: Thanks. I'll see if I can find it.

Still doesn't work on my computer, I fill everything out and it does one of 2 things:

Closes itself

Or

It comes up with something like "Bad Pallete missing quantizer" or something like that.

Jim: Of course, I will.

It seems I'm having trouble fixing it. I got the Quake Modeller (version 0.9b) however it saves them in AQM files rather then MD2 files. I tried changing it to a MD2 file but that made Python close itself.

Spiderspriter: maybe your problem has something to do with that?

By the way, I found this cool alien invader dude Q2 model, and I converted it to an actor. Maybe I'll submit it. It's pretty funky, and has a lot of skins.

The website Xim mentioned is the place to go. Quake II > Game Files > (dropdown list) Models. Or try this link, I'm not sure if it will work though.

You'll need a Fileplanet account. When you want to download the file and you're not logged in you get to this webpage which presents you two huge advertisements which make you think it's all commercial and all. At the top it sais you need to log in to download files though (a regular account is free).

EDIT: Beware. At Planetquake they don't seem to be able to sort things out. I just downloaded some quake 3 that were placed in the Quake 2 catagory T_T

EDIT 2: Yay, guide worked perfectly. I'll check out this Q2Modeler program later... Great guide, by the way.

Thank you Joshiii-Kun.

But yes Mabdog. You only need to pay for a Fileplanet account if you do not want to wait for your downloads. I don't mind the wait really. It's never longer then a couple minutes to get a Q2Model.

Anyways. I'm still having trouble fixing the Doom Guy model. If somebody else wants to give it a shot, go ahead. You should be able to find it at planet quake.

I am SO freaking tired, what the **** does it even mean?!? I use nothing but the textures that come with it. I'm sorry to bump, but I want the freaking storm trooper I downloaded, and I went step by step with it! Need me to record a Camtasia video of it?
