7gen For Dummies - Obj2vxp

Obj2vxp - Convert OBJs to props
Click on the dark grey 'obj2vxp' button to the right.
The obj2vxp window opens.
In the CFG settings tab, there are the following input fields: Expansion name, Author name, Orig. Author name, Shortname and some display text Filename
- Expansion name: This will be the name of your expansion.
- Author name: This is your name. The editor of the expansion.
- Orig. Author name: This is the name of the person who made the picture.
- Shortname: This is the name of the VXP! To make things easy, name this the same as the Expansion name (seen above). The vxp will be created in the location where 7gen was installed. Please read this before making a name for your Expansion
- Filename: Displays what you typed in the Shortname field.

In the Images tab, there is a list of all of the obj files in the 7gen folder. You can scroll down the list by clicking on the list and then using your 'up' and 'down' keys to scroll. Alternatively, you can use the mouse by using the scroll bar on the right hand side or use the wheel on your mouse.
- Refresh list button: This button reloads the list with any additional images that were added to the 7gen folder since bmp2vxp was opened.
- Enhance Color checkbox: This is checked as the default. (not sure what this means, help me out someone)
- Textured checkbox: If the obj/model uses textures check this box. If the obj is textured, make sure all of the textures are in the 7gen folder and also make sure they are 256 colour bmp image(s).

In the 3dmm IDs tab, there is an input box and a couple of buttons.
- ID: This is where the ID for your expansion will be placed. (see Generate ID button)
- Generate ID button: Click on this button to automatically generate an ID for your Expansion.
- Get ID from 3dmm2.com: This button no longer functions. It takes you to a website that no longer exsists.

In the Contol tab, there is a long bar, stretching from one side of the window to the next, a check box 'Install VXP' and a buton 'Create VXP'.
- Loading bar: This is the progress of the 'Generation' process. (see Create VXP button). Once the blue bar reaches the right-hand side, the generation is complete. The vxp created in the 7gen folder.
- Install VXP checkbox: If this is checked, when the vxp is created, it is automatically installed into V3dmm. The default is unchecked, which means you have to manually install the vxp.
- Create VXP button: Click on this button once all of the above data has been entered/tweaked. You are now moments away from using your new prop.

Too many polygons? How detailed was the model?

Perhaps it is an incorrect .obj format?

Check it all the polygons are all quads or triangles, any polygons with over 4 sides won't work at all.

Considering the fact that Goldeneye is a Nintendo 64 game, I doubt it would be over 3-4 sides per polygon.

Well i get 'Missing texture groups'. it works, but only when it's not textured. obviously it looks a bit crappy untextured, but...

*EDIT* Oh, wait, now I'm getting Bad ID as well.

The whole model has to be textured for it to work. You can't have untextured polygons in it anywhere.

Edit: And the texture files and the .mtl have to be in the same folder.

Oh right. I'll try that. thanks! And the texture files are in there as well, so there must be an untextured polygon.

*EDIT* unfortunately I have a crappy 3D program... how do you find untextured polygons? They all look textured...

there are no untextured polygons, the textures are included in the 7gen folder, the object is low-poly, but still it's not working.

Having had no success with it, I'm coming to the conclusion that it's obj2vxp thats fucked

So what 3d software do you use? I am familiar with 3D studio max, but I thought I should ask before I attempt to model anything.

I'm using a textured OBJ and converted the textures to 256 color. When I try to create the vxp, it says "Failed: Bad ID!" and I do have an ID! What am I doing wrong?

do you have it activated (appearing in the box on the right)? if not, just double-click it in the list on the left and it'll be there
