The Very Basics Of 7gen - NOOBS PLEASE READ - aka 7gen For Dummies

Ok, in this thread i'll go through the basics when it comes to 7gen. If you need help installing 7gen, go here. Providing 7gen is up-to-date, you will have eight options: actorextractor, background2vxp, bmp2vxp, campan2vxp, jkl2vxp, md2_to_vxp, obj2vxp and rgb2vxp.

Status: In progress. My 'objective' is to make simple and easy to follow guides for 7gen. I still need to get tutorials for Campan2vxp and Jkl2vxp. Anyone who knows how to use these, please let me know.

My thread about unique filenames only really applies to the shortname. When it comes to the actual name of the VXP, you'll most likely actually want to be as unspecific as possible.

Also, Recompress Sections makes the file smaller, IIRC.

Unspecific as possible... what do you mean by that?

File shortnames will overlap, but the actual names of the Expansions do not, so you'll want to make it easy to find.

I'm either not with it or i don't understand. Are you abe to edit the first post to how you are explaining? Sorry, i must be a bit tired. I'm trying to make things simple, but it seems i'm just complicating it.

Just get rid of the red text in the explanation for 'Expansion Name' by not the one for 'Shortname'.

Yeah, but I think you might be neglecting the intelligence of the reader a bit much. It doesn't really take a genius to figure out what the loading bar is for.

I agree, but you do get the odd person that has no clue. I'm going to leave it how it is. If there are further complaints, then i'll consider changing it.

Also, In the Computers course I am doing at the moment, we have to type up very simple documentation for almost everything we use. So that has carried on, so to speak. It's just how i have been taught to type procedures/documentation.

I have discovered that what i am doing is way too big (character limit). So i am going to have to post separate threads on each part of 7gen and then link them all to this one.

Edit: 300th post YAY

I'm a dummy. Say, if I wanted to turn this image into a photograph-object in 3DMM, is there any way I can do that in 7gen?

If you learn how to use the BMP2VXP part of 7gen, then you can make it a 3d word texture, which when you put on a flat tile font will make pretty much the same thing.

Is anyone able to tell me why after I've successfully made a textured obj out of blender into a vxp (for the first time in a year) it doesn't appear in the prop list in 3dmm? It also I've just realised is only 1 kb.. what's that about?

OH yeah and there's an error log:

I think when that happens with me, i have to reduce the size of the texture or reduce the size of the polys. If you give it a try, be sure to 'save as' before you try to change anything in case it gets stuffed up further.

But yeah, it hasn't happened to me in a long time, so i can't be sure. Anyone else got any suggestions?

Oh my. Well i can't help you any further.... unless....

Well if it's just a cube, why don't you use BMP2VXP for the texture and use a cube in wackydings to put the texture over the top. Or is that not what you want?

No I was only doing a test, I'm actually trying to make a house but I've given up now, I'll just construct it in 3dmm.

3dmm has no polycount limit and no filesize texture limit. The only limit is the number of polygons that can use the same file texture.

Did Blender export a .mtl file along with the .obj when you exported? Also, the file texture you used need to be in the same directory as these when you run obj2vxp.
