Box method using |||||||| in shapes

I've noticed a lot of movies make straight looking shapes out of letters using ||||||||| but whenever I copy what they do, instead of a box like figure, like a paved road, I get the dashes.

I just watched Actor's Day, and in it roads and suc h are made out of ||||, but I can't mimick it because I get the dashes and not the paved shapes I want.

What am I doing wrong?
