How can performers who play such shallow, dumbed down music be someone's favourite bands?

My favourites:
Enigma, Oasis, Pink Floyd, Lacuna Coil, New Order, VAST, Unfaith, Moby, Massive Attack, E.S. Posthumus, Tool, Rammstein, This Past Year and The Verve.

I'll stop there...

Yar. My favourite bands are all the ones on my playlist. :|

EDIT: I find purpose for post!

Your sister's band looks deadly. I am intrigued by their association with the godly Nightwish. And I like the tiny comments on their page like, "If, when you look at these, the pictures overlap the text, then your browser is inferior."

Yeah, sexy indeed.

Not that it bothers me, but like a year ago, no one did.

The worst part is they like Opeth, and other bands that are complete shit compared to them. Eg. Korn.

If your going to like Opeth, do them a favour and surround them with equally or nearly as awesome bands, not crap.

Right now, and most of the time, The Beatles.

Their songwriting is amazing, and they (especially George Harrison IMO) were very talented at their instruments.
They also were very good singers, and had their harmonies were perfect... they could even do harmonies like Crosby Stills and Nash (+Young), as heard on like Sun King and... other songs. They were excellent singers.
The songwriting is obviously the main reason they were so popular though, and it was amazing... all songs were theirs that were popular, except Twist and Shout.
That they could come out with so many albums in so little time is so cool...

If you want to hear what I consider the height of the Beatles' songwriting, get Abbey Road and listen to the whole thing straight through. But really, ANY album will show off their songwriting. I just got Rubber Soul, and its AMAZING.

Sometimes the Allman Brothers are my favorite, cause of the album Live at Fillmore East. Other times Crosby Stills and Nash are, cause of their debut 1969 album.

The Beatles are normally my favorite though.

I've got all of their albums except Yellow Submarine and 1 or 2 of their earliest ones. But they are all on vinyl, and most are the U.S. versions, which suck. But whatever, I can always download the songs I'm missing, and record the albums from vinyl.

No. Other than the falsetto singing, Coldplay are nothing like Radiohead. I like both of them, but for more soothing songs, Coldplay is the way to go. Thats why they are so much more "mainstream" than Radiohead. And they are able to do this without losing what made them famous in the first place. Though, there was a bit of change between the two albums. I credit that to his loss of virginity after the first one.

I get so sick and tired of bands like Three Doors Down and Third Eye Blind where every single song sounds the exact same, I just don't like em. Creed does fall into that 'sound' once in a while, but they also have a bunch that simply don't.

I think they had quite a few good ones, actually. "Higher" wasn't bad, nor was "To Whom It May Concern", "Signs", or "With Arms Wide Open".

Anyway, my current top 10 bands/artists, in no distinct order:

01. Opeth
02. Regurgitator
03. Amon Amarth
04. The Beatles
05. In Flames
06. Jeff Buckley
07. The Mars Volta
08. Nevermore
09. John Butler Trio
10. Dream Theater

Also I surprisingly like Jimmy Eat World, considering it's a pop-punk band.

Dream Theater, Tool, Rammstein, 30 Seconds to Mars, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, Nine Inch Nails, Pink Floyd, Liquid Tension Experiment, old Korn, Quarashi, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Weird Al, The Prodigy, Onesidezero, Jimi Hendrix, A Perfect Circle, System of a Down, Medeski Martin & Wood

I think they are the least guilty of that label of all who would be in the category, though heh. One or two popish songs to get the albums sold, 12 or 13 decent ones to make it worthwhile

Now, out of your list, you have a pretty good idea of the talentless junk I listen to, but which band do you think I'd appreciate the most? I've been meaning to try out Mars Volta, but I'd like to hear your opinion, if you wouldn't mind

Yeah, like Andres said, apart from The Mars Volta you'd probably like Regurgitator the most out of my list. Though they're not exactly your kind of music - they're just the most upbeat of the bands I listen to.

http://www.livejournal.com/users/tehcal/46931.html

There's twenty-one of their songs that I uploaded. Get a whole bunch, because they vary a LOT. Like... you could listen to the first two, which are similar, and then assume that the rest is the same kind of music. But like... they have changed a lot during their history.

You'd also probably like Jeff Buckley and John Butler Trio... I'll upload a song by each now for you.

Gorosaurus
09-25-04, 06:04 AM
I love bands that are incredibly varied. Ben Folds and They Might Be Giants have very few songs that sound alike. Well.. a lot less than most at least

EDIT: Thanks a ton guys, you all rock. I'll give a bunch of the stuff mentioned a listen tomorrow

http://lilith.ongakunoko.com/tehcal/John%20Butler%20Trio%20-%20Take.mp3

Also, in that Regurgitator journal entry I posted the link to above, I'd group the songs kinda like this. I love all these songs, which is why I uploaded them, though the ones in bold are my absolute favourites.

Pop/Electronica:

"Polyester Girl"
"Are U Being Served?"
"Freshmint!"
"The Lonely Guy"
"Feels Alright!"
"Happiness"
"Astronaut Barbecue Party"
"Fuck The Goddamn World"

Rock:

"Black Bugs"
"Everyday Formula"
"I Piss Alone"
"Just Another Beautiful Story"
"Modern Life"
"Ghost"
"Superstraight"

Hip-Hop:

"I Will Lick Your Arsehole"
"I Like Repetitive Music"
"Hullaballo"
"Head 1 Psycho"
"C'mon"
"Fat Cop"

Mind you, a lot of their songs are played for jokes (ie "I Piss Alone" is impossible to take serious, but I think it's brilliant). So you would probably like most of them to an extent.

Nightwish is okay, but they're too... over the top for me. It's like, "VIOLINS, WOMAN WAILING, GUITAR PLAYED AT 100X SPEED, RNADOM VIOLINS, MANY CHOIRS SINGING, ETC. ETC. ETC."

They remind me of Queen, only not in a good way.

Right now:

The Beatles They are ever present on my favorite lists. Been listening to Sgt. Peppers a lot lately. "She's Leaving Home" is greatness)
Broken Social Scene You Forgot It In People is an amazing album. "Anthems" and "I'm Still Your Fag" kick uber ass, as does "Cause=Time"
Interpol I'm really really looking forward to Antics.
The Killers Musical equivalent of crack. I can't stop listening to Hot Fuss. I always sing along. "All These Things That I've Done" and "Smile Like You Mean It" are my favorites.
The Shins "Caring is Creepy" and "New Slang." Nuff said.
Simon and Garfunkel Garden State has such a good soundtrack, and "The Only Living Boy In New York" is like, the high point.

If you don't know any of these bands, I urge you to seek out the songs I mentioned.
